Although Mexico reduced its maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by 57.8% between 1990 and 2015, the country did not fulfill its commitment to reduce the MMR by three quarters, as outlined in the Millennium Development Goals. Moreover, the 2016 MMR of 38.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, as a national average, conceals vast disparities and inequalities within the country.
